Beach After Beach...

Phuket's stunning beaches are almost interconnected, like beads on a string. In the south, you'll find the beautiful Kata Beach with a wide and shallow shoreline, perfect for families with children. Just to the north is Karon Beach, another family favorite. The beach seems endless with small, soft sand dunes and plenty of water sports. Further north is Patong Beach, a long sandy beach with a bustling atmosphere and lively pace.

About a dozen kilometers north of Patong lies the lovely, long Kamala Beach. Here, you'll find sun loungers along the beach and a charming village. Kamala Beach is very popular among families.

Near the airport, about 5 km north of Kamala Beach, is Surin Beach. The beach is very nice with several local restaurants and bars, although the general selection is limited.

Between the different beaches and towns, you can easily get around by local buses or taxis.

Family-Friendly or Bar-Laden in Phuket?

Kata has several centers with shops, tailors, restaurants, and bars. Kata Center Point is a popular shopping center that also serves as a gathering place in the evenings. Charming Karon is slightly larger and also has a wider range of most amenities. Patong is the liveliest, with countless restaurants, bars, and entertainment options.

A Wealth of "Things to Do"

You can easily take the local bus on your own to Phuket Town. Historically, it served as an important trading point for Arabs, Indians, and Portuguese. The older part still has buildings in Portuguese-Chinese style. Worth visiting is the temple, Saan Jao Sang Tham. While in town, don’t miss the local market.

It's easy to book (though sometimes difficult to choose from) the plethora of excursions offered locally. How about paddling in a Sea Canoe, a narrow rubber canoe, paddled in groups, safe, comfortable, and always stunningly beautiful? A classic boat tour is to Phang Nga, the island world around James Bond Island. Another excursion island is the fantastically beautiful Virgin Island. Speedboats take you there, and on the island, you're met by white, velvety sand and crystal-clear water.

Food and Shopping

In Phuket, you can enjoy Thai, Indian, Italian, and a wonderful mix of different cuisines. After a few days, you're likely to find your favorite spot, perhaps along the beach or in a hidden corner. If traveling with children, you'll always receive extra attention.

Similarly vast is the selection of shopping and nightlife. Take your pick and don't forget to haggle! Kata and Karon are perfect for families, while Patong might suit younger visitors looking for vibrant nightlife. Patong's center has now been enriched with a new large shopping center, worth a visit.

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Laem Singh beach is hard to find but only a few minutes by car from Patong Beach. A steep road leads down a slope. It's worth the effort—the beach is fantastic.

• Fantasea in Kamala—entertainment park with shows, restaurants, and shopping—all in one area. Open only in the evenings.

• Radsada Handmade. Fantastic fabrics from various parts of Southeast Asia. A bit pricier.

• A flight to Phuket offers something for everyone, with options to suit all tastes and budgets, and short distances between attractions.

GOOD TO KNOW

Phuket airport is located about 25-40 km from the various beaches.

You can travel with minibuses between the airport and the beaches. Prices start from around 100 THB per person per way.
